Pakistan inherits a rich tradition of social sciences, yet social and anthropological studies have been few and far between. This selection of papers underlines the complex and diverse features of the entire gamut of Pakistan society: saints in Sind, Afghan refugees in Peshawar, Chiefs inGilgit, rural groups in Faisalabad, Punjab, and tribalism in Baluchistan. Each of these is in some senses unique and the papers, the gist of which is presented below, attempt to capture this uniqueness. David M. Hart: THE AFRIDI OF THE KHAIBAR TRIBAL AGENCY AND THE KOHAT FRONTIER REGION highlights the relative cultural and structural homogeneity of the Pukhtuns, their tribal organisation and value, in particular, their concept of Pukhtunwali or Pukhtun Custom. The maintenance of Pukhtun identityhas been vividly illustrated in the paper citing the Afridis of the Khaibar Tribal Agency and the Kohat Frontier Region. Dr. Akbar S. Ahmed: HAZARAWAL: FORMATION AND STRUCTURE OF DISTRICT ETHNICITY is an in-depth analysis of ethnic and extraethnic groups, complexity of ethnic compulsions, and the correlation between ethnicity and the democratic process in society. Hazara society has been taken up as a case studywhich articulates two opposite trends simultaneously - the Hazarawal ethnicity and the survival of deeper primordial ethnicity.
